The practice of drinking coffee is very popular worldwide – a practice that is furthered thanks to the advent of coffee shops at every street corner in every country. There are so many kinds of coffee available that choosing the best is a difficult task, especially if you are new to the world of coffee.
Here are some types of coffee that are readily available in cafes or can be prepared at home.
1. Café au Lait
This is a drink simlar to the Café Latte, but uses brewed coffee instead of espresso, and has a 1:1 ratio of milk to coffee, and thus has a less intense coffee flavor.
2. Caffe macchiato
A caffe macchiato, also called espresso macchiato, is an elevated version of the espresso coffee. Macchiato means ‘spotted’ in Italian, so the assumed translation is that caffee macchiato is coffee with a spot of milk.
3. Caffe espresso
Espresso is the primary requirement for most coffee-based drinks including cappuccino, macchiato and café latte, owing to the high concentration of caffeine as compared to other beverages. It comes in small cups that are usually one ounce in size.
The name coming from an insult to rude Americans who could not drink full espresso, the Americano is a drink that combines one espresso shot with seven ounces of hot water.
5. Black Coffee
Basic, pure, black coffee is brewed by drop method with the French press or a percolator and is served with no milk that retains a true coffee flavor.
This beverage is made of an even ratio of coffee, frothed milk, and steamed milk. Coffee shops often increase the amount of milk so that customers get a bigger cup even though this will lighten the coffee flavor, and is usually served with a topping of flaked chocolate or cinnamon.
7. Café Breva
A variety of cappuccino, café breva is made of half and half milk while cappuccino makes use of full milk. This makes the café breva creamier and richer in flavor.
8. Dry Cappucino
Less famous than a regular cappuccino, dry cappuccino comes with less foam and no steamed milk.
9. Caffe Latte
With a 3:1 milk to coffee ratio, this drink is made of one shot of espresso and steamed milk that is not frothed.
10. Flavoured Coffee
This refers to any variation that is added to and alters the flavor of your coffee. Coming in either syrups or spices, the most common flavors are chocolate and cinnamon.
11. Double Shot
Two shots of espresso in your coffee cup drip mixed together will give you a double shot, which as its name suggests is double quantity of espresso with milk.
